Sand Dunes

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Alpine tundra, forests, massive dunes, grasslands, and wetlands are all protected as elements of the Great Sand Dunes natural system.

Rio Grande National Forest

The Rio Grande National Forest (NF) is 1.86 million acres located in southwestern Colorado and remains one of the true undiscovered jewels of Colorado. The Continental Divide runs for 236 miles along most of the western border of the Forest.

San Isabel National Forests

A busy urban national forest noted for the majority of fourteen thousand foot peaks in Colorado and stretching from Colorado’s Front Range to the wide-open grasslands of western Kansas. Over 60 percent of the water used by metropolitan Denver originates from the South Platte River.

San Luis State Park

In the shadow of the Great Sand Dunes National Park is peaceful San Luis State Park and Wildlife Area. Waterfowl, shorebirds, songbirds and raptors fill the sky over this unique desert ecosystem, making San Luis an outstanding watchable wildlife area most of the year.
